Male, Other Diagnosis, Thyroid, Undiagnosed
24-hour urinary free cortisol, cortisol, Levothryroxine, male, testosterone, thyroid, UFC, undiagnosed
Hello, I am a 24 year old male who has been feeling out of wack for 4 years now.
I have been going to numerous different doctors to figure out what is going on. It all started with the indication of low thyroid, then noticed low testosterone. I was on levothyroxine for about 2 years. I recently went off all medication, and just had my labs done and i have all normal levels.
Everything i get done is contradictory to my last lab test. I have had positive 24hr cortisol urine results but nothing high enough to diagnose.
Sorry if this is a confussing post 🙂

Male, Undiagnosed
24-hour urinary free cortisol, Acanthosis Nigricans, ACTH, Buffalo hump, Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia, cortisol, headache, male, memory, mouth sores, pain, puberty, skin, sleep, slow healing, Stretch marks, UFC, undiagnosed
My son is almost 16 years old and so sick he hardly gets out of bed anymore. Although no Dr.s believes me I do believe he has Cushings and the Dr.s can not give me any other idea’s of what is wrong with him only that he needs to lose weight and exercise more. My son is so tired of hearing this that at his last appointment with a specialist at Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia he left in tears and wants to know why no one is helping him. He is to the point where he doesn’t even want to go to the Dr.s anymore, he thinks it’s pointless. He has only had one 24hr Urine test which came back normal and an cortisol & ACTH test taken at 5pm and these were also within range. I am going to guess maybe things started at the age of 9 or 10 and progressively gotten worse.
His symptoms are as follows and the explained away answers from the Dr.s –
1. Headaches all day everyday – sometimes severe, sometimes just there and no amount of advil seems to take it away completely – Dr.s probably puberty and since he is a big kid take up to 4-advil every 4 hours.
2. Buffalo Hump – we brought him to the Dr. about 2-3yrs ago for this odd hump on the back of his neck – Dr.s it’s just a fat deposit – he just deposits fat in odd places
3. Red to purple stretch marks that fade and get brighter but never go away completely – they appear in masses on his sides, back, shoulders and stomach – Dr.s response although his stretch marks are quite impressive they are typical of what you would see in cushings they are not purple enough or wide enough.
4. Severe pain in back and knee (sometimes elbows) – he can’t even take a simple trip to the stores as it is to much for him to walk around – his is 15yrs old and is now asking me to get him a cane to help him get around. Dr.s response to the pain – must be growing pains (my son is 6’1″ and I was just told he is pretty much done growing)
5. He does not sleep at night, says can’t fall to sleep no matter how hard he tries and when he finally does fall asleep in the morning early hours he will sleep most of the day, then wake up still feeling tired. He told me it’s like his mind sleeps but his body doesn’t feel rested at all. Dr.s said he needs to stop video games and t.v. to hours before bed – these types of things stimulate the mind thats why he can’t sleep.
When the Dr.s were told the rest, they really didn’t say anything at all – below are the rest of his symptoms:
6. He is starving at night – he says he has to eat he is so hungry
7. Having a hard time remembering things and getting progressively worse
8. Losing his grip – he can barely right his name – when I ask him to squeeze my hand it hardly even hurts me now and he says when he tries to squeeze hard he gets this odd sensation up his arm and it feels really off .
9. Has a hard time sitting for an extended amount of time – this has caused him to miss the last 6 weeks of school – his says the pain in his back and sides are just to much to handle when trying to sit.
10. He has had numerous skin aliments, mouth sores
11. Always thirsty
12. Acanthosis Nigricans – back of neck, under arms, elbows
13. never a sick child until recently – strep throat, mono (which I was first told he didn’t have), normal colds now last for weeks with him where he never even got colds before.
14. slow healing of cuts and he scars horribly
I am sure there are other things but these are the first to come to the top of my head. His biggest complaint is the memory loss, lack of sleep and pain. I am scared for my son and do not understand how this is acceptable for anyone let alone a 15yr old. I am watching him get worse and watching his precious teenage years just pass right by him.

Hi, I have been diagnosed with probable cyclical adrenal cushings. This all started after a scan on my abdomen for something unrelated revealed bilateral adrenal adenomas. When I googled adrenal adenoma everything fitted into place. I had been depressed , put weight on which were my main symptoms along with anxiety.
I was then referred to an endocrinologist in the UK who ordered some initial tests. I did Two 24hr UFC’s on consecutive days one came back at 36 and the one the day after was 91(normal below 50. Another time the normal range was 165 and the 1st one was 108 and the one the day after was 393.
I then did an overnight dexamethasone test and suppressed below 50 to 48. My endocrinologist then said he didn’t think I had cushings and said come back in six months and said it might be due to stress. I then got a second opinion and then the real testing started.
Roll forward four years and I have done about 30 – 24hr UFC’s numerous ACTH and full blood counts. renin and aldersterone, metoclopramide test, glucagon test, vassopression test, oral glucose stimultation test, day curve cortisol, spent a day in hospital walking round the ward for two hours, then eating a mixed meal and then sitting down for two hours while they tested my cortisol every hour . Did a Low Dose Dexamethasone Test and came out in a rash and my blood pressure dropped so got told I can’t do the test again. Had a bone density scan. I hIad a pituitary scan that revealed a lump inside my tongue and then had to have a whole body scan followed by a tongue biopsy(which turned out to be benign.
I have had about five CT scans on my adrenal glands and was referred to an endocrine surgeon this week who is going to perform a right adrenalectomy. The right one is 4cm in diameter.
He said looking at the scan he thinks it looks like macro nodular adrenal hyperplasia but wont know till pathology get to examine the specimen.
It’s been a long, long journey but finally looks like it’s coming to a conclusion now.

Adrenal, Diabetes, Other Diagnosis, Undiagnosed
24-hour urinary free cortisol, adhesions, Adrenal tumor, Buffalo hump, diabetes type 2, hair, hirsuitism, moonface, scarring, sleep, sweating, tired, UFC, weight

Hi
I’m new to cushings and just looking for some insight into this disease. I’m 67 yrs and for the last 15 yrs I have not felt good and problems getting worse with no explanations in the past. After discussing problems with my Dr I was tested twice for thyroid but tests came back normal.
I do have other problems due to surgeries in the past, I have adhesions, scar tissue etc. I am now type 2 diabetic since last 5 yrs.
I was admitted to hospital because of stomach pain in July this year, I had a cat scan which showed I had tumours on my adrenal glands. The left being the largest. I am waiting to see the endo surgeon in November but have just finished some tests I’ve blood, 12 hr and 24 hr urine specimen. No results as yet.
My symptoms are as follows.
Sweating mainly evening time around 9pm
Can’t sleep until 3am, but could easily sleep on afternoon if I allowed myself.
Changes in face. When I look in mirror I often think this does not look like me.
I have put weight on but not a lot. I have been noticing a lot of facial hair on my face.
I had very, very thick hair and it’s now extremely thin. I have a type of rash on my face which has got worse over the years. It seems like my legs and arms are much thinner than they used to be but my abdomen is getting larger, mainly my upper abdomen. I don’t have any stria but have similar marks on my legs especially around my knees. My skin marks easily. I also seem to have a small buffalo hump on my back. Seem to have brain fog but usually put that down to age. Feel tired all the time.
Some things I can maybe put down to age.
I would appreciate any comments from members. I will let you know when I get results.

Hashimoto's, Menopause, Other Diagnosis, Thyroid, Undiagnosed
24-hour urinary free cortisol, adrenal function, back pain, cancer, cortisol, goiter, Hashimoto's, menopause, saliva, thyroid, UFC
I’m wondering about my situation. I haven’t been diagnosed with Cushing’s but I had my thyroid removed (Hashimoto’s with goiter, family history of thyroid cancer), concluded menopause, had two car accidents (rear-ended)…all in the space of a few years, around 2003-2006. Up until 2003 (the first car accident,) I was a very energetic, upbeat, even-tempered, fit, active, mother of two, and holder of three part-time jobs including teaching high school. I was 50.
Following the car accidents, I developed chronic disabling low back pain. Following the thyroidectomy I developed all kinds of symptoms involving almost all body systems. I’m now bedridden to housebound for great swaths of time. Up until now I’ve been haunting thyroid and adrenal boards, and plowing my way through endocrinologists, MDs and naturopaths looking for answers.
Starting in 2006, I began experiences episodes I call “tizzies” which have baffled all concerned. They last from 6-8 months, building up, reaching a peak, slowly subsiding. They are extremely debilitating and involve many, many symptoms mental and physical. After six or seven of these, I’m convinced they are episodes of extremely high cortisol and I do have some labs to support that, though they are from alternative type laboratories. The saliva ones take four samples spread throughout the day and the 24-hour urine ones are as they sound.
During a trough I have a saliva lab showing mostly low cortisol values. During a different trough I have 24-hour urine results from which the ND pronounced I had Addison’s-like adrenal function. During a recent peak I have both a saliva and 24-hour urine showing off-the-charts high levels of cortisol. Coming down from that peak, I have saliva results showing cortisol low in the morning moving up to extremely high at night.
What do you think?

Golden Oldies, Pituitary
24-hour urinary free cortisol, back pain, Blood test, bruising, cortisol, depression, dexamethasone suppression test, discharge, fatigue, Golden Oldie, miscarriage, prolactin, UFC
A Golden Oldie
Hi all:)
I am in a pickle, and i feel its time to take my head out of the sand and get this Cortisol thing sorted. So here goes.. My son is 7 – i breastfed for 2 weeks as only a tiny drop would come out and we just could not get it to work…. But 7 years on i still have white/milk like discharge from right breast, and clear from left. Mainly right breast. I informed my doctor for the last 7 years everytime i went that it was odd it was still coming out- and that i was literally tired ALL the time. I was also depressed – so i was put on medication for this, and each time i mentioned this, it was always put down to depression. Or how is your diet? etc. I grew tired of this old answer because life was good- i had nothing to be depressed about- and my lifestyle and eating habits are really good.
So the doctor ordered several blood test, a full looking over. And scan for my breasts- which were normal. But the blood test came back with high cortisol.
I do bruise easily yes, lower back pain, sever fatigue- but the doctor said bec i didnt not have the swelling etc it could not be cushings.
Next test was 24 hour urine collection and dex suppression (not sure if thats spelt right) test.
Still cortisol came back high. but prolactin was not high?
My doctor then refered me to a endo – which gave me an appointment almost 9 months away- (major shortage in endos where i lived- and i was not considered a risk)
IN this time i seperated from my partner and just got stuck into work- put my head in the sand and when i wasnt working or looking after my son i slept. Not normal.
I went back to the doctor again finally a year later – ready to sort this out- breast scan again- still fine. Blood test- cortisol still high, little higher than last two tests she said, but not alarmingly high.
I cant take any contraceptive pill etc as they make me crazy. Something is up with my hormones. I had a miscarrige 2 months ago, followed with severe abdo pain- for a month and a half. I am not one to make a fuss and very high pain tolerence so no ultra sound was given at first just antibiotics and assumption it would cure it.
I lived with it for one more month- then went to doctor again- scan done- ovary bleeding and other in wrong place- shrugged off and told come back in 8 weeks to see if on going problem.
Arhhhh
And now i have to get back into Endo and be placed in another waiting list to be seen. Because i am 28 – i think they do not see me as a person who needs help the quickest. Its just i dont carry on about my symptoms and moan- i get on with it, i have to, i am a mum- i am so frustrated now tho- something is not right.
Any advice. I dont know- any reassurance or explanation – help anything would be appreciated greatly.
I feel like i am some kind of person to the doctor who is one of those ones who is looking for an illness. But i am looking for an answer to my symptoms.

A Golden Oldie
I was officially diagnosed with Cushings in December 2009. I had done several urine test ,they were inconsistant, I had the saliva test done, I had symptoms of cushings, brittle bones, fractures, fatigue, brusing, round face, weight gain quickly and hard to lose, lose focus, depression and arthritis beginning in my hands. IN December 09 I had a Dex. test done which quickly confirmed that I had cushings.
It took three years to get a diagnosis. So, I had surgery scheduled for Feb 2, 2010. I had a Cyst that ruptured so that was important to come out the surgeon removed 20 % of my pitutary, but didn’t get the tumor.
A few weeks after that surgery I have massive bleeding out my nose and mouth, and was in out of the emergency room for a week having my nose packed four times. After a month and going back to my Endo. My endo. told me there was still a mass on my pitutary. I didn’t feel better I ached all over by the time I got home from work I was done for and could only go to bed.
In aug. 2010 I had the second surgery. the plan was to remove the mass on the left side of my pitutary if my cortisol level did not go down the day after surgery the surgeon would take me back in to remove the right side of my pitutary. Thank goodness after the blood work my cortosol was .6 so there was no need for a second surgery ( or third) I am now 4 month post surgery.
I am now taking 30 mg of hydrocortosol a day. My joints ache, I get fatigued around 1:00 and lose focus. I get very depressed some days and can do nothing. I am 46 years old and have a 19 year old son and 15 year old daughter, My husband is very supportive.
I feel so guilty for having this, people don’t understand how horrible I feel some days, just because the tumor is gone doesn’t mean I feel better. Not losing much weight yet which is frustrating. but exercising when I can.

Hi My name is WENDY from New Zealand …I am 57 yrs young…I am a nurse…..it was once suggested by mail to my GP that I may have episodae cushings…and that it would be intersesting to take 24 urine specs for cortisol levels over a period of time….this was never done..I only became aware of these when I asked for a copy of all my notes as I was moving to Australia…..
My symptoms I believed robbed me of my former self…..
I stopped menstruating at 45yrs old….my weight would fluctuate wildly..sometimes by 10 to 15 pound… at one point wighing in at 100 kgs……and for no apparent reason losing weight as much as 4 -5 kgs……my happy out going approach to life would become sad.lifeless with a blunted facial affect…..heat intolerance…low energy…poor sleep…high blood pressure.
I have had the unusual presentation of supraclavicle pads…..of no suspicious origin…
I have always managed to work but sadly these changes took their toll on my personal life….I remain optimistic.with the support of loving family and friends…..cushie helper I truly feel that my condition occurs in cycles…….
I await your thoughts….sincerely Wendy

Golden Oldies, Pituitary
cortisol, dex test, MRI, saliva, surgery, symptoms, tumor, UFC
Another Golden Oldie
Doctor says I do have Cushings, but just still looking for the originating site. Cortisol level twice the upper limit of normal.
Had symptoms for YEARS, but no one pulled it all together until this summer I had TWO Spontaneous foot fractures. Had houseguests at the time, both German doctors. The husband handed me a list of tests before he returned to Germany and said “I think you have Cushings, have your doctor run these tests”.
Saliva test positive, 24 hr urine positive, MRI showed small tumor. Endocrinologist says that the jury is still out – 20% of population has pituitary tumor with no problems. Had the dex test last week. Sounds like everyone has the same feelings as I do – please find something and let me put my life back together. My body is disintegrating!
For those of you who have been through this and had surgery, how do they regulate your hormones after the surgery. Were you able to back to work right away? How quickly did you lose the extra weight. (I have gained 40 lbs in the last year). Please help!
